Ragbrai 2010: July 28, Day Four

We left Clear Lake Wednesday morning and passed through Swaledale, Rockwell, Cartersville, Owen and Rockford before arriving in Charles City to spend Wednesday night.

Scott leaving out for this job at the post office.

When we arrived the previous day, Scott and Mary had already set up a tent for us. Rain was in the forecast, and they didn't want us to get our tents wet, then have to pack them up the next morning. The large tent that was set up for us, had a side room where we put our bikes. Good thing we did, as it did rain.

Karla, Jason, and I pose for a photo in the yard before heading out.

This was where we walked to the previous evening to watch fireworks. Was just a couple blocks from our host's home.
Lajunta drove around Clear Lake to photograph some of the many displays for Ragbrai.

Karla and Jason stop for some snacks.

Couldn't resist taking a photos of this sign.

Think it's hard to ride your bicycle across Iowa? How about on a unicycle!

A small group of guys rode in their suits!

This thing had a motor and was running!

The fellow who was tending to the contraption above. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

 I should adopt this motto!

Shot this for one of  my son-in-laws, Keith. He manages a McDonalds.

The shade is always a nice place to rest, even if it's in a graveyard!

As we go through one of the pass through towns, riders have to dismount, due to the traffic jam!

"Smile, Karla". Sorry about the smudge on the lens, maybe got some sun tan lotion on it.

Medical personnel tending to an injured rider.

This fellow was some sort of medical first responder. With his motorcycle, he could get through all the bicycle traffic quicker than an ambulance.

This swing attracted a large crowd. Riders would swing out and drop into the water. Heard the local law enforcement officers shut it down later in the day, as things were getting a little too out of hand.

Photo above and below was a huge hole in the ground where people could hunt for fossils.

I always take time to stop and visit with FFA kids, and usually buy their product. I wasn't an athlete in high school, but was on several FFA judging teams.

Thought I'd do a close up of my Razorback with an Iowa Jayhawk in the background.

 Cookin' Chicken.

There's always a long line at the kybo's (porta potties), but the saying on Ragbrai, "There's never a line at the cornfield"......lol

 Friendly Pirates.

Not only did this guy not want anyone on his lawn, but he couldn't spell.

Arriving in the over night town of Charles City.

One of the many team buses.

If you don't ride with your own team or charter, the Ragbrai trucks haul your gear.

Here we are, arriving at the home of our hosts for the evening, the Johnsons.

A meal fit for a king! Mrs Johnson prepared a couple of dishes of home made lasagna! She had also baked home made cookies. These folks could spoil a person!

Speaking of spoiling us, the Johnsons invited us to sleep in their spare bedroom! Quite a treat, after having slept in a tent for the past several nights.

Short mileage, only 55.88 miles.

Click here to go to day 5.
